Ankle ligament injuries Injuries
ATFL surgery is a preciedure performed to reconstruct the ligaments on the outside of the ankle, namely, the Anterior Talofibular Ligament (ATFL). The specifics of the surgery can vary depending on the extent, age and location of the tear.
ATFL surgery generally involves:
Anesthesia: Either local anesthesia or general anesthesia to keep you pain-free during the procedure.
Incision: Mr Bajaj will make an incision in the skin over the ankle to access the damaged ligament.
Ligament repair: If the ligament can be repaired, Mr Bajaj will reattach the torn sections back together. If the ligament has excessive and non-repairable damage, Mr Bajaj will remove the ligament and replace it with a ‘graft’ from another part of the body. Occasionally, synthetic materials are used as a graft instead.
Tissue repair: If other tissues have been damaged during the injury, Mr Bajaj may repair them too e.g. tendons & cartilage.
Closure: The incision is closed with sutures.
Recovery: In the early stages after surgery, rest is encouraged until you have been given the go-ahead from your surgical or rehabilitation team to progress. Initially, you be given a special walking boot, and recommended physiotherapy to improve the strength of the muscles around the ankle.
The exact recovery time can depend on a variety of factors. Exercise prehabilitation and rehabilitation will increase your chances of a successful recovery, so it is important to discuss this with you surgeon before opting for surgery.
